edf_cutting_pricesLast Friday, EDF Energy announced to cut electricity prices from March 31, hurray! Finally my energy supplier becomes the fourth company cutting prices after British Gas, Scottish & Southern and E.ON.

I was expecting EDF to drop electricity and gas prices, but there will be an average reduction of 9% just for electricity, keeping gas prices unchanged. I will wait N-Power to be the next cutting prices and then I’ll decide if it’s worth it to switch supplier, at the moment I would go for British Gas.

I need to ensure that the EDF’s cut will save me any money, because this reduction will just benefit around half of EDF’s customers.

Gas prices increased by an average of 17% and electricity by 20% in 2008, but it seems like utility bills won’t fall by 15% as some experts predicted that due to dropping wholesale prices last year.

As I posted last day ‘...it seems like energy companies will be forced to drop the prices shortly...’, and here it’s: E.on has announced plans to cut prices!

Graham Bartlett, director of E.ON's retail business, said: 'We are delighted to announce today that we'll be reducing our electricity prices for millions of customers ...’.

E.ON said it would cut average electricity prices by 9% from March 31. If I had to choose one of these three companies I would switch either to British Gas or SSE because they will cut gas prices, gas bill is more ’important’ (expensive) for me than the electricity one.

I’m still waiting for EDF to drop prices, I guess it will happen before the end of February (I hope so...); because this week, bosses from Scottish Power and EDF Energy said that price cuts were under consideration.

cutting_energy_prices Household gas bills will soon start to come down, for the time being there are two energy companies which have announced pricing cuts for their customers, British Gas and Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE).

British Gas said that it would cut gas prices by 10 per cent from February 19 and SSE would do the same from March 30. Unfortunately my energy provider is EDF, but it seems like energy companies will be forced to drop the prices shortly due to wholesale prices have drastically come down in the last few months.

I’ve decided not to switch my energy provider until the rest of companies cut their prices so I will be able to choose the cheapest one.

I wasn’t really concern about saving energy until my bills started going up, since then I decided to apply a list of measures that save energy and also help the environment.

This is a list of basic tips when saving energy. Everyone should be doing these simple measures already, if you want to save on energy you should start with these easy steps:

  • Energy Saving Light Bulbs (uses around 60% less energy than traditional bulbs).
  • Turn the thermostat down by 1 degree (saves £40 a year per degree).
  • Turn off electrical electronic devices, not use standby function (could save more than £35 a year)
  • Double-Glazed Windows save around £90 a year. With Single-Glazed windows, around 20% of heat is lost.
  • Closing the curtains prevent heat not escaping through the windows.
  • Fix the water taps, a leaky hot water tap can cost you £40 a year in heating cost.

As I posted a few weeks ago about keeping a financial track I want to share with you my first month review for this year. Here it’s my financial track for January (it’s a summarised version of the real file I keep updated):

monthly_financial_reviewGas: waiting for money back.
Broadband:        £ 0
Mobile Phone:    £ 34
House rent:        £ 410
Groceries:          £ 186
Transport:           £ 47
Gym:                  £ 52
Others:               £ 232
(Clothes, pubs, restaurants ...)

Total costs:      £ 961

Salary income:  £ 1852

Total benefits:    £ 891

Goals for the next month:

Change from pay as you go to a pay monthly contract on my mobile phone, I’ve seen on 3 a plan ‘300 minutes /text’ for £ 15 that’s just what I need, which will reduce a bit my utility bills.

Do the shopping in different supermarkets trying to choose the one with the best quality/price relation.
Try to use more the bicycle so I can save money on public transport, also I should spend less on pubs and restaurants or try to find discount vouchers.

I encourage all of you to do the same so you can realise how much money could be saved every month.
